week 3 post 2
The combination of storytelling and journalism makes for the most powerful writing that has the capability to change the outcome of a policy or situation in the world. Using research to tell stories is extremely important because without the research, the story is not credible, and without the story, the research is not compelling. For example, Trey Bundy looks behind the solitary confinement policy for juveniles. Through his journalism, he gained a massive population of people who supported him and the movement to end solitary confinement for juveniles under 21. Trey made sure to look behind the policy and the headlines and to dig into what is real. What is happening without any bias. his original goal was to poke holes in public policy through a narrow Focus so that he could accurately issue and help support the agenda against solitary confinement for juveniles. Tray Used techniques that Anita Gonzalez, Holly's Huges, and Ashley Lucas recommended for telling a compelling story. They use the story of Ismael Nazario to open up a window for understanding. Without his story The journalism would not have taken two people as much as that did, to hear about the tears and rage and mental health issues that these juveniles face helps outsiders sympathize with the issue. Through a series of hard work, Sunday managed to create media that persuaded legislation and change in his community successfully.
Trey clearly describes the experience the inmates and correctional officers have endured and includes percentages and the meaning behind those percentages so that there is a deeper meaning drawn from the writing. In January of 2015, because of the vital journalism and hard work by Trey and his team, Rikers prison bans the use of solitary confinement for inmates under 21 years old, which was a massive step in the right direction seeing as this prison is notorious for its use of solitary confinement. This journalism path leads to New YorCityty councilman Daniel Dromm and sponsoring a recently passed bill that required correctional officers to report data about who is held in solitary confinement so that it cannot be done without reason. This is another crucial step forward because, previously, inmates could be segregated from the others because of small misdemeanors, which may have not even occurred. This is a clear example of how, when journalism and storytelling are combined, social change can happen.

There are just a few errors we need to look at here. We can chat about them at our next meeting.
